About DSIP
DSIP (delta sleep-inducing peptide) is a nonapeptide with the sequence Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu and a molecular weight of roughly 849 Da. It was first isolated in 1974 by Schoenenberger and Monnier from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits during induced slow-wave (delta) brain activity — the observation that gave the peptide its name. It crosses the blood-brain barrier readily, which is part of why it has remained a subject of central-nervous-system research literature for five decades.
Unusually for a peptide of its age, DSIP has no definitively identified receptor — the published literature describes its activity in terms of downstream effects rather than a characterized binding target, which makes it a recurring subject in mechanism-of-action research. Reported research contexts include delta-wave EEG activity in animal models, circadian and chronobiological signaling, hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and corticotropin interactions, thermoregulation, and stress-response pathways. Its unresolved mechanism is the reason it appears in comparative studies alongside better-characterized neuropeptides.
